Xstrata Copper Kidd Mine Wins the John T. Ryan Trophy

Repeat victory! 2008 and now 2009

The Kidd Mine in Timmins, ON was awarded the John T. Ryan trophy recently for their exceptional record in Safety by achieving the lowest injury frequency in the underground mine – metals category in Ontario for 2009. The implementation of PASS began in 2007 at Kidd and they have for some time now been operating within the Ownership or most advanced phase of PASS. Winning this award for the province of Ontario represents a significant accomplishment as there are a large number of mines operating in the province and this is the second Ryan trophy in as many years for Kidd mine. We at PASS Inc. would like to congratulate everyone at Kidd for their hard work and dedication to improving Safety in their daily lives.

Xstrata Copper Horne Smelter wins the FJ O’Connell trophy

Their second win in a row!

On June 14th, the Horne Smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, QC received the FJ O’Connell trophy for achieving the best improved record in Safety in the surface operation, transportation and first metal transformation category. Since 1966, this trophy has been given annually by the Quebec Mining Association and aims at recognizing most improved and best overall mining operations in terms of Safety performance. This trophy is named after Mr. O'Connell ~ a mine engineer known for his remarkable approach towards mine Safety.  With their ultimate objective being “ZERO HARM”, this is a demonstration that hard work and efforts from everyone involved produce results that get them closer to their goal.

The implementation of PASS began at the Horne Smelter in September 2007 and they are now entering the Ownership stage of the PASS system.  We at PASS Inc. would like to congratulate all of those involved and we wish them continued success.

OCI Wyoming

Wins The IMA-NA Safety Achievement Award

Mike Hohn, Gary Gomez and Kirk Milling attended the Industrial Minerals Association – North America (IMA-NA) annual spring meeting in Washington D.C.  During the meeting, IMA-NA Vice Chairman Kevin Porterfield and President Mark Ellis presented IMA’s annual safety recognition awards.  The IMA-NA Safety Achievement Award recognizes the best reportable injury rate for an individual IMA-NA member company by size category for the preceding calendar year, in this case 2009.  The award criterion evaluates a company’s safety performance at all of its U.S. facilities and non-U.S. mining sites in North America and this year, OCI Wyoming L.P. won the award in the “Large” category for locations that have 700,000 or more employee hours.

Mr. Ellis said about the award recipients, “The safety performance of these IMA members is truly inspiring.  OCI Wyoming had an injury rate of 1.56 per 200,000 employee work-hours.  To put that in perspective, the preliminary injury rate for all metal and nonmetal mines in 2009 was 2.72.”  Since the IMA-NA began their awards program in 2003, this marks the first time a trona mine has been recognized with their Safety Achievement Award.

Please join us in congratulating everyone involved for their ongoing commitment to Safety.  The implementation of the PASS system began at OCI Wyoming in 2004 and as demonstrated here, their hard work and effort has been recognized on a national scale.

KMC Mining reaches a new milestone

2 Million Hours without a lost time incident!!

In 2002, the implementation of PASS began to further improve the company’s safety performance.  Employee acceptance of the program was outstanding and continues to result in a positive improvement to safety performance.  In January 2006, KMC was awarded the Suncor President’s Operating Excellence Award in recognition of employees and contractors who achieve the highest standards of performance in Environment, Health and Safety and then in May of that same year KMC employees reached a significant milestone by achieving one million hours worked without a lost-time incident.  Recently, we learned that they have reached a new milestone and we would like you to join us in congratulating KMC Mining employees once again for having reached 2 million hours without a lost time incident.  This achievement is a testament to their employees' continued focus on safety.

KMC’s newest project is Imperial Oil’s Kearl Oil Sands Project which is a new oil sands development located northeast of Fort McMurray. They are in a joint venture arrangement (K2 Mining) there and are doing the site development program at Kearl. The program involves the initial clearing, grading for facilities, initial road construction, initial pit development and starter dyke construction. It’s certainly a flagship project within the oil sands and we wish them continued success.

Rio Tinto’s Resolution Copper Project - Wins Sentinels of Safety Award

Over 4 years No Lost Times

We would like you to join us in congratulating everyone working on the Resolution Copper Project for their excellent job done.  The Department of Labour's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Mining Association (NMA) have honoured Resolution Copper with a Sentinels of Safety award in the Small Underground Metals category. The Sentinels of Safety is the most recognized, longest-standing award given for occupational safety and is awarded annually to mining operations in various operational categories. To qualify, the company worked over 52,000 man-hours in 2008 without a lost time injury. Resolution Copper was also recognized by MSHA and the NMA in 2006 and 2007 with a Sentinels of Safety Certificate of Achievement in Safety for its outstanding safety record.

"This award reflects the way our staff has embraced being a culture committed to safety, and we're very proud of our employees' collective achievement," said Resolution Copper President and CEO David Salisbury.

Cementation has worked closely with Resolution Copper Mining at their Resolution Project near Superior, Arizona, since February of 2006. During this time, Cementation USA has worked approximately 500,000 hours without sustaining a lost time injury by carefully considering risks in advance, involving everyone, communicating well and continuously ensuring that everyone is equipped to perform safely.  They were recently awarded the 1st annual Arizona State Mine Inspector’s Safety Award for Zero Lost Times in 2008.

In addition to this honour, on June 19 2009, the Resolution Copper Project (Cementation USA being the major contractor on site) has achieved three years without experiencing a Lost Time Incident (June 2009). This excellent effort represents approximately hundreds of thousands of hours worked on the project to date. Please join us in extending congratulations to the Resolution Copper crew on this outstanding achievement in safe work performance.

Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited owned by Hud Bay Minerals

Best Safety Record in their 80 year history

Brian Murphy, Mine Manager Trout Lake Mine
The implementation of PASS began in May 2009 at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited in Flin Flon, MB and after attending an introductory session on the PASS System, Brian initially felt that it was too simple of a process to work. Later he realized that it is the simplicity of the PASS System that makes it so effective; Brian said “It is great to see the mining crews having a conversation around Safety prior to going to work underground. They are definitely starting their shift with a more Positive Attitude around Safety and the work they have planned to get done”. The Trout Lake Mine has not had a lost time accident since the implementation of PASS and the overall Organization has the best Safety Record in their 80 year history. They remain focused on Safety through strong leadership by positively reinforcing Safe Behaviours and Attitudes which is critical to any company’s success.

Celebrating our 25th Anniversary

We are very proud that over 70,000 workers and their families have benefited from the PASS System over the last 25 years

In 1985, Jim Burns, the Founder and President of PASS Inc., introduced a basic prototype of what was to evolve into the Positive Attitude Safety System (PASS) to Cominco’s Sullivan Mine. This early version achieved significant results and in the early 1990’s was refined into the Positive Attitude Safety System complete with all key process components and coupled with Jim Burns’ unique implementation approach.  However, PASS is also a collaborative process; thus it continues to improve and evolve with innovations from both our clients and consultants.  The PASS Safety Leadership Process is based on the concepts of Learned Helplessness, Positive Reinforcement and Intervention Therapy, which Jim Burns studied at the Universities of Victoria and Calgary and later utilized in the fields of counselling and corrections.  For the past 25 years, Jim Burns and his colleagues have been working in hundreds of Natural Resource and other organizations throughout the world and have Offices in Canada, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Chile.

All the Consulting Services regarding PASS were developed, delivered and owned by J.S. Burns Consulting Services (a Sole Proprietorship) until December 15, 1993.  On that day, Positive Attitude Safety System Inc. (PASS Inc.), which is a Federally Incorporated Company of Canada (Incorporated on October 27, 1993), purchased all Intellectual Property, Materials and Goodwill associated with the “work and system” of Positive Attitude Safety System from J.S. Burns Consulting Services.

First Coal: Rio Tinto’s Clermont Mine

Queensland, Australia

Congratulations for producing Coal after many years of development work. Under the leadership of David Lamb, GM, PASS has been embedded into the culture of both the Clermont Mine and Project.  Jim Burns has been providing consulting services here from day one and PASS is one of the key factors that assisted the organization in exceeding their Safety targets and establishing a culture of Positive Visible Leadership.  The site will reach full production in 2013, has a projected life of 17 years and will employ 380 people.

Memorial of Dougie MacDonald

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family

We at PASS Inc. would like to extend our heart-felt condolences to the family of Doug MacDonald, known affectionately as “Dougie the Fiddler” among family, friends and fellow miners.  Late last week, we were informed of his passing following a traffic accident on December 26, 2009 in Cape Breton, NS.  Doug attended the May 2008 PASS Masters Course in Kelowna, BC where we and his fellow participants had the opportunity to spend 2 weeks with him.   Doug was a model PASS Masters candidate and a champion of the concept of Safety through Leadership, he will be sorely missed.

Out of Court Settlement

For the last eight years, PASS Inc. has been pursuing legal action against Albian Sands Energy Inc. and Jeff Stibbard for copyright infringement in the Federal Court of Canada and PASS Inc. decided to accept their out of Court Settlement in February 2009. After the amount of time, energy and costs, it was a difficult decision by the board members to accept their offer, however it was time to get on with business and plans for expansion. We would also like to express our appreciation to our Intellectual Property Lawyer, Bruce Green of Oyen Wiggs Green & Mutala.

Corporate Social Responsibility

PASS is engaged in a number of worthwhile projects, supporting organizations and individuals which share the core values of PASS

Materi Girls Center

PASS Inc. is proud to become a sponsor of the Materi Girls Center located in Meru, Kenya, East Africa (PO Box 194 Meru, Kenya). The founders of PASS Inc., Jim and Claire Burns have been personally sponsoring students at the school for over 25 years. They feel privileged to have been associated with the Center and the director, Brother John Koczka, SC, a Brother of the Sacred Heart.

In 1973, Brother John Koczka wanted to help a handful of girls get enough food to eat so they could stay awake in school. Today, his project, the Materi Girls' Center in Meru, Kenya is changing the lives of 500 school aged children. In addition to programs in formal and informal education, medical care, nutrition, food production, dairy farming and general community development, the center also runs an outreach program helping over 600 undernourished children with Nutrition Clinics and a Mobile Medical Unit. There are also related programs for infants and adults.

Before the center was established there was a 30% child mortality rate in the region. This has been cut to under 6% for the targeted infants, thanks to an outreach clinic run by Kenyan women. The center also dispenses medical supplies to the community.
